Let us have a brief
look at some of the very interesting facts that Taj Mahal carries with it as a
part of its history.
1.
It is
situated at Yamuna River bank, created by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan. He had
created this masterpiece for his empress Mumtaz Mahal, after her death during
giving birth to their 14th child. It is also listed in as one of the
Seventh Wonders of the World, by UNESCO for its exemplary structure.
2.
There are
four minarets that surround the Taj Mahal. These four pillars are leaned
outwards slightly. The reason behind such a structure is to prevent them for
falling on the Mahal, in case of any natural calamities.
3.
There is a
beautiful garden around the Taj Mahal, that was designed when the Britishers
came to India, to give them the aesthetic feel of manicured lawns, the same as
in London.
4.
There is a
mosque for prayers that is closed on Fridays.
5.
It is
believed that more than 20,000 labourers from all around the world were brought
to build the monument and it took about 22 years to complete the construction.
Story also has it that they were killed after creating it as Shah Jahan didn’t
want such an eternal monument to be built again.
6.
Both Shah
Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal are buried at the main chamber located below the main
tomb. The rest of his wives and the other servants are buried in mausoleums
nearby.
7.
You can
also check out many types of precious and semi-precious jewels like turquoise,
ruby etc. that are fixed on the marbles. These were sources from all over the
world. The estimated cost of the Taj Mahal during the 16th entury
was a whopping 32 million rupees.
8.
During the
Sepoy Mutiny in 1857, a lot of the precious stones were plucked out and stolen
by Britishers. However, even today you can check out a few of the remaining
ones at the Mahal. They glow when you put light on them. It a sight worth
